Hundreds of Mercury readers left Facebook comments on a story about a Brownsville man who was tired of being disturbed by another apartment tenant going through his recycling bin.
Opinion was divided, with some taking the side of the bin raider while others didn't like the idea of people riffling through their yellow-topped bin.
“He is probably just trying to make an extra quid,” wrote Michelle Faughlin.
“Maybe set up some containers so that you can put any bottles/cans in them and let him get the refund.”
Others suggested the raider was doing a good thing by recycling the bottles and cans – even though they were already in a recycling bin in the first place.
But Narelle Bush knew what it was like to be woken up by someone going through their recycling bins at night.
“We have it here every recycle day in Mt Warrigal,” Ms Bush said.
“Drives me bloody mad at 11:30 – wakes us all up with the bottles clinging and clanging.”
Some people admitted to crushing their cans and peeling labels off bottles – which makes them ineligible for the reverse vending machines – to deter bin raiders
At least one reader found the story had solved a mystery for them.
“I thought I was going paranoid last time,” wrote Jas Taddeo.
“The bin was full out on the kerb. When I went to check it it was half empty.
“So that’s what is happening!”
