But the reigning NSW Young Australian of the Year needs the community’s help to attend one of the top universities in the world.
The year 12 TIGS (The Illawarra Grammar School) student’s involvement in the National Youth Science Forum has led to the Mangerton teenager being invited to attend the Research Science Institute (RSI) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
“RSI is a program for 80 students from around the globe, which allows us to pursue cutting edge research we are passionate about,” she said.
“We will work alongside top scientists and professors from Harvard University and MIT learning from those most distinguished in their field.”
Macinley has been inventing and helping society through a number of projects.
But it was her SMART Armour device that primarily saw Macinley named as NSW Young Australian of the Year.
The SMART Armour - a device to aid women during radiotherapy breast cancer treatment, was recognised last May at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.
“I was the first Australian in the competition's 67 year history to place first,” Macinley said.
“I would love the opportunity to deepen my passion in STEM, and the RSI Program is a perfect way to do this.
“However, none of this will be possible without much needed support and funding. I must raise $18,225 to attend.
“Any contribution is much appreciated and will help me to achieve my dreams.”
The RSI program starts in June.
