Onlookers say the car continued travelling even as it was consumed by the flames.
It narrowly avoided a collision with a passing truck before coming to rest.
Police say the northbound car - a small hatchback - burst into flames after it crashed into a guard rail near the Picton Road off-ramp about 11.30pm.
Passers-by feared the driver had perished in the blaze but he was soon accounted for.
The man, believed aged in his 30s, was not injured.
He was taken to Campbelltown Hospital for mandatory tests.
Camden police are investigation the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The crash caused the closure of the northbound lanes. The Mercury understands the closure lasted about an hour.
