Black Diamond Heritage Centre committee president Kerrie Christian, Ron Cairns, Andy Hubscher, Alan Potter and Graham Pryor are among those eager to ensure the community knows all about all about the events of that tragic day in Illawarra history. The explosion resulted in the death of 81 men and boys working underground in the mine at the time. It occurred in the Hill End district of the western area of the mine and most lost their lives in the act of escaping from the poisonous carbon monoxide gas generated as a result of the explosion.
The findings of the Royal Commission set up to investigate the incident found an accumulation of gas was likely to have been ignited by the open flame from an overcharged explosive shot placed in the coalface. The methane gas explosion propagated a coal dust explosion that traveled towards the surface seeking fresh air.
A Bulli Explosion Memorial remembers all those men and boys who died that day.
