The pair had just left for a weekend away on the South Coast when a neighbour called them to alert them their single-story clad house was ablaze.
“The owners had just gone away for the weekend, at about 8am and we got the call a bit after 8:30am from neighbours who noticed smoke,” said Station Officer at Shellharbour Fire Station Paul Campbell.
He praised the fast action of firefighting crews from Shellharbour, Albion Park and Oak Flats who attended and controlled the blaze by 8:50am.
Station Officer Campbell said the couple were now speaking with their insurance company as the fire extensively damaged their house and contents.
As the home was securely locked up for their absence, included all security shutters down, it did make it difficult for firefighters to try and ventilate the home.
“There’s extensive heat damage right throughout the residence, it’s been a bottled up fire that has gradually increase in a period of time from when they left to when we arrived. It’s gotten very hot in there and caused a lot of heat and smoke damage throughout the house,” Station Officer Campbell said.
“In this case the neighbours notified Triple Zero very early in the piece and as a result we were able get there quickly and put the fire our before it escalated.”
Authorities said there were no asbestos concerns during the operation, and no-one was hurt.
