The largely unused outdoor space, once dry and dusty, was transformed into an attractive area for teachers and students to engage in outdoor learning and recreation.
Garden beds were redesigned and replanted, barbecue and seating areas were revamped and an old structure was taken down to open up the area.
It was the first project by the recently formed City Serve Wollongong, a volunteer organisation that brings together local church and community members on projects.
Already running successfully in Newcastle and Shellharbour, Wollongong committee member Louise Beaton said Saturday’s project was a great start with more than 50 volunteers showing up.
“Even I’m overwhelmed by the fantastic atmosphere here, where we have members from 10 different churches working together with Corrimal garden club, teachers and students and community members,” she said.
“Everyone is enjoying that sense of community, and achievement, and will hopefully join us again for other projects.”
The first stage of the Corrimal High transformation now complete – the committee will plan further stages which will include a new servery and an amphitheatre.
