Emergency services were called to the Gipps Road property after neighbours heard a crackling noise and saw the house alight about 1.10am.
Inspector Brian Pedersen, from Lake Illawarra police, said despite the house being abandoned there was concern regarding the whereabouts of a person known to frequent the address.
“There was believed to be a homeless male squatting at the house, but a search last night by the fire brigade didn’t locate anybody,” Inspector Pedersen said.
A crime scene was set up at the location and police detectives and fire investigators are investigating.
Inspector Pedersen said a male was seen near the house at the time and that formed part of the investigation.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
