“I believe sceptics play an important role on a ghost tour,” Wollongong City Ghost Tours owner Craig Bloxsome said.
“If someone took a picture of some spirit orbs, or what they believe to be spirit orbs near a pool or something like that, a sceptic will look around and say, ‘well, it’s either dust particles, moisture or both’.
“Quite often people that go on ghost tours that believe… Once they’re on a ghost tour they’re pretty well hyped up and the adrenaline’s already rushing.
“They’re looking for anything to validate. So sceptics keep everyone grounded.”
Wollongong City Ghost Tours will launch the ‘Haunted Mystery Bus Tour’ on Friday, April 13 and Saturday, April 14.
This will entail a night touring three supposedly haunted locations throughout the Illawarra.
Mr Bloxsome, who previously owned and operated a successful ghost tour business in Tasmania, is now based at Nowra.
He has conducted ghost tours of Helensburgh Tunnel and Berrima Courthouse.
Mr Bloxsome said the new Illawarra tour would include the use of paranormal investigation equipment and a psychic medium.
“It will be a night full of ‘history and mystery’ as we send you on the bus in search of paranormal activity at well-known haunted locations,” he said.
“Wollongong has been screaming out for the paranormal for a long time and I believe we are ready to deliver something extraordinary.”
Mr Bloxsome said the paranormal investigation equipment used would be akin to the equipment seen on television programs such as Ghost Adventures.
He said this included the use of electromagnetic field (EMF) detectors, called K2s.
“We believe a ghost emits energy, and therefore a lot of our equipment is based around picking up on energy, such as a REM Pod,” he said.
“REM Pods are another EMF detection, (meaning) that if anything comes close to it, that it will send off flashes of different coloured light and sound.
“We also have an Ovilus 5, which is a phonetic word generator, and it converts energy into words.”
Mr Bloxsome said the organisers couldn’t publicly release the location of the three venues, which include a private residence.
However, he said one would likely be “a haunted pub in the Illawarra”.
“We don’t claim that we’re going to capture spirits; our purpose (of the tour) is to open people up to believing that there’s another realm, or that there is a spiritual realm out there,” Mr Bloxsome said.
