Fowler blasted the ball into the bottom corner after Yuzo Tashiro expertly held up possession in the 31st minute.

Both sides had chances to add to the score sheet in steamy conditions, but the sole goal was enough for the Wolves to take all of the spoils.

“I think we were good for the three points,” Wolves coach Jacob Timpano said.

“We started the match a lot better than we did last week.

“One or two sloppy mistakes almost cost us but I think we controlled possession, which was better than last week, and in the end we created the more chances to win the match which was thoroughly deserved.

“It was a huge effort by both teams in these conditions.”

Wollongong should have behind in the match inside the opening five minutes, but Alex Canak fired his effort over the crossbar.

Fowler’s goal swayed the ledger in the Wolves favour and they nearly doubled their advantage when Josh MacDonald found the back of the net.

The attacker was well found by Nick Montgomery, but was judged to be offside by the linesman. 

The Suns struggled to breach the Wolves defence in the second half as Wollongong chalked up consecutive clean sheets to start the season.

Wollongong now head on a four game road trip, with a stoush with Sydney FC looming next weekend.
