Deputy Mayor Kathy Rice said the table was an idea she pursued after strong support from the public. She said table tennis provides well-recognised physical and mental health benefits, especially to older residents.
“Studies from around the world have shown that table tennis can help keep your brain sharp by increasing motor skills and cognitive awareness,” Cr Rice said.
“It also improves reflexes, core strength and balance. Furthermore, it is an incredibly social activity which has its own range of mental health benefits.”
Paddles and balls for the table can be borrowed from Kiama Library using either your library card or driver’s Licence.
Council staff designed, built and installed the weatherproof table, which comprises a granite top and steel net and base. Plans are in motion to also install tables at Jamberoo and Gerringong.
