The man’s arrest on Tuesday night followed a woman reported to police that a privately-held video had been electronically accessed and uploaded to a social media webpage.
Officers from the Hume Police District launched an investigation and arrested a 31-year-old man at a home in Colo Vale about 10pm.
Investigators also seized a computer and several mobile phones at the location.
Police will allege the man was previously involved in a domestic relationship with the woman.
The man was taken to Bowral Police Station and charged with intentionally distributing an image without consent.
An apprehended domestic violence order was also applied for and granted.
The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Moss Vale Local Court on May 22.
The Hume Police District duty officer, Chief Inspector Brendan Bernie, said there were a number of things internet users could do to protect themselves from becoming a victim of crime.
“Security of your personal information is crucial,” Ch Insp Bernie said.
“Never give out any personal information including your name, home address, phone number, private email address, details of where you work or recreational activities to others.”
Ch Insp Bernie said changes were made to laws in 2017 to combat the rise in incidents involving the sharing of intimate images of people without their consent.
“Any person who knows of – or is a victim of – image-based abuse is encouraged to report the matter to police,” he said.
