Colloquially known as Gilligan’s Island, the roundabout at the intersection of Throsby Drive and Campbell and Flinders streets is known to get clogged with traffic at peak periods.
Roads and Maritime Services will spend $220,000 to add an extra approach lane from Campbell Street.
This would separate vehicles turning left from those travelling straight or to the right and means all four approaches will have two lanes.
“The intersection is one of the busiest in Wollongong’s CBD during the morning and evening peak and this work will improve journey times for all road users,” Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra Gareth Ward said.
An exact start date has not been set, though the work is expected to take place at night during April.
“There will be temporary traffic changes in place when work is carried out, including the closure of Campbell Street in both directions between Flinders Street and Keira Street,” Mr Ward said.
Wollongong City Council also identified the roundabout as a traffic concern, stating that short-term improvements were needed, with a longer-term plan to install traffic lights at the intersection.
