As proud partners of the Dragons, the Illawarra Mercury was keen to kick off the first home game at the WIN Stadium in style. Today’s special edition features Matt Dufty on the cover, who is proudly sponsored by the Illawarra Mercury.
There is great hopes for the 2018 Dragons, particularly given the start to the season. Those hopes are tempered by a similar start last season before the club disappointingly drifted away to miss the finals.
This is a new-look Dragons side though and some new faces bring new hope. The Dragons will be out to slay the Knights and maintain the rage ahead of another big clash against traditional rival, the South Sydney Rabbitohs, the following week.
The game at WIN Stadium will also carry a special significance. The Dragons and the Knights play for the Alex McKinnon Cup.
McKinnon started his league career with the Dragons, debuting in the NRL in 2011, before moving to the Newcastle Knights in 2012. In a round three match for Newcastle in Melbourne, suffered fractures to his C4 and C5 vertebrae, leaving him a quadriplegic.
The Dragons have won all three of the McKinnon Cup matches so far and will be keen to continue that unbeaten run on home soil. A huge crowd is likely to enjoy the superb conditions predicted for WIN Stadium on Sunday. Get along and support the Red V.
