The baby's parents were in the process of lifting an unassembled tent from the top of their car when it fell, said NSW Ambulance Inspector Matt Sterling.
“They were going to put it away and in the process it's fallen onto the baby capsule,” he said.
“The majority of the weight appears to have been taken by the capsule the baby was in but there is some concern that there's been some impact with the head.”
The baby's mother is accompanying him on the flight to hospital.
“The medical retrieval team confirmed the baby was fairly stable and he's been transported more for observation than injury.
“Mum was transported to care for the child in case there's ongoing care – things like breastfeeding have got to be considered. Also, so the child has got that familiar face there as well.”
5.25pm: A NSW Ambulance rescue helicopter has landed at Helensburgh’s Rex Jackson Park.
The injured baby was taken to the park by road ambulance and will be flown to the Sydney Children’s Hospital at Randwick.
The child is in a stable condition.
4.50pm: An eight-week-old baby has been injured in an incident at Helensburgh on Wednesday afternoon.
Initial reports suggest the child has suffered chest and head injuries after a 50kg rooftop tent fell on them.
Four ambulance crews have responded to the incident, which happened about 4.30pm, including a rescue helicopter from Bankstown Airport.
The first crew was on scene within three minutes, NSW Ambulance said.
