Emergency services were called to the popular hang-gliding and para-gliding take-off and landing site, Bald Hill, on Otford Road at 2:15pm.
There paramedics found the victim with a fractured pelvis, chest injuries and a fractured leg.
NSW Ambulance Inspector Matt Sterling said the man was performing a 180 degree turn in the air, with no loss of speed, when he nose-dived into the ground while trying to land.
“The wind has caught underneath his canopy and has flipped him about five metres up then head first into the ground,” Inspector Stirling said.
The victim was treated at the scene before being airlifted to St George hospital in a stable condition.
