Police are investigating after a man's dead body was discovered on the fringes of a sports field at Shellharbour.
A man walking his dog made the grim discovery in the Myimbarr wetlands, bordering Myimbarr Oval off Wattle Street, about 9.30am Saturday.
Police, detectives and forensics officers have now converged at the scene, a short distance from fields where hundreds of children are playing Saturday morning soccer games.
Lake Illawarra chief Inspector Andrew Koutsoufis said the deceased man had yet to be identified.
“We're just waiting for [forensics] to examine the scene and hopefully during that process we'll identify him,” he said.
The man is believed aged over 40.
He was found lying facedown, on a rocky causeway among the reeds.
The man was not carrying any ID. He was wearing dark tracksuit pants, white joggers and a dark blue and white striped top when he was found.
Police have not yet determined whether his death is suspicious, however sources at the scene have told the Mercury the causeway, which leads to Ocean Beach Drive, is a popular shortcut for people departing Shellharbour Workers' Club.
The area has been cordoned off with police tape, with police officers fetching the occasional stray soccer ball from neighbouring games.
