SURF BOAT RACING
Two Illawarra crews will fly the flag for the region in a State of Origin-style clash with Queensland at this weekend's opening round of the Australian Surf Rowers League held at Surfers Paradise.
Corrimal were chosen to represent NSW in the under-19 division, while Austinmer's open women's crew is also lining up for the Blues against the Maroons.
Both crews won their respective divisions in the recent Georges River Marathon, breaking long-standing race records in the process.
Corrimal sweep Peter Scott said his crew of Shane Thelan, Christian Adams, Kurt Gray and Jordan Scott has been busy juggling training and competing with HSC exams.
"My boys' priority has been to do their best in their exams, but they've still found time to fit some quality pre-season training into their schedules and are looking forward to representing their club and state to the best of their ability," Scott said.
"At this stage we have no idea who our main rivals will be, but it's the first surf event of the season and the Queenslanders are renowned for their strong boat crews."
