The Critics' Choice Awards, the latest significant test for Oscar candidates, was held in Los Angeles on Sunday and Regina King, for If Beale Street Could Talk, trumped Kidman again for supporting actress.
Kidman was nominated for the Joel Edgerton-directed Boy Erased.
King appears to have the Oscar supporting category stitched up after her Critics' Choice, Golden Globe and other award show wins in recent weeks.
Kidman is also legitimate candidate for a lead actress Oscar nomination later this month for her performance in Destroyer, but the film critics left her out of the category.
Collette, for her performance in the horror film Hereditary, was Australia's only hope for the Critics Choice lead actress award but Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born) and Glenn Close (The Wife) shared the award in a sensational tie.
Another Australian Oscar contender, screenwriter Tony McNamara for The Favourite, also missed out on a Critics Choice original screenplay award for co-writing The Favourite.
The category was won by First Reformed's Paul Schrader.
NIDA graduate Fiona Crombie was nominated for her production design on The Favourite but she was beaten by the designers from Black Panther.
Yvonne Strahovski missed out in the TV supporting actress award for The Handmaid's Tale.
Westworld's Thandie Newton claimed the trophy.
Christian Bale's Critics' Choice best actor win for his portrayal of former US vice president Dick Cheney in Vice confirms an exciting four-way best actor Oscar race.
Bale, Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born), Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) and Viggo Mortensen (Green Book) all have legitimate shots at the Oscar.
Roma, just as it did at the Golden Globes, won the top two Critics' Choice awards - director for Alfonso Cuaron and best picture.
The Oscar nominations will be announced on January 22 and the winners February 24.
