Berkeley five-eighth Andrew Dallalana was rewarded for a consistent 2008 by taking out the Paul McGregor Medal and Illawarra Carlton League Player of the Year Trophy at the league's presentation dinner at the Steelers Club.Dallalana becomes the second Berkeley player in two years to win the prestigious award, following in the footsteps of retiring captain-coach David McLean in 2007.Dallalana polled 16 votes to finish two ahead of Corrimal captain Pete Tweddle and Wests halfback Mark Simon.Thirroul halfback Scott Borg gained 12 votes and Wollongong/University prop Jarryd Dykes 11.A thrilled Dallalana described his win as a "big surprise as well"."Scott Borg played great all year and was probably unlucky not to win it, but I'll grab it with both hands," Dallalana said."It was a long year and it was good to get a bit of reward for it."Dallalana paid tribute to McLean, whose serious foot and ankle injury ended his season and ultimately his career, putting a severe dent in the Eagles' premiership campaign."He's a great coach and I'm sure if he would have played out the season this year he probably would have taken it out again. The guys really respect him and there's a good club culture down there," Dallalana said.Dallalana also received the Frank Smith Trophy for best back. Tweddle took out the George Grofus Trophy for best forward.Experienced forward Steven Crouch will take over as Berkeley head coach next season.Premiers Thirroul took out the Coastline Printing Club Championship Trophy and Bob Brown Minor Premiers Trophy. The League News Trophy for highest point scorers went to Dapto's Adam Blake in first grade (160 points), Collegians' Mark Brenton in second grade (82 points), Berkeley's Josh Windisch in under 18s (154 points) and Port Kembla's Christian Kupenga in the VB Cup (84 points).Wests centre Carl Fritz received the Jack Royall Trophy for highest try scorer with 15.Dapto captain Elliot Smith was awarded the Alex Jack Trophy for under 18 player of the year.Port Kembla hooker Joshua Michalowski was the VB Cup Player of the Year.Wests claimed the Bob Lowrie Trophy for the club scoring the most tries with 95.
