A prime mover carrying cooking oil caught fire in the carpark of Marulan's southbound BP service station at about 4.15pm, RFS Southern Tablelands operational officer Lachlan Gilchrist confirmed.
The male driver, thought to be aged in his 40s, managed to detach the trailer before the fire spread further.
Without a doubt, the quick response by everyone and the quick-thinking by the truck driver averted what could have been a disaster.
RFS Group Captain 6, Graeme Welsh said the prime mover was totally destroyed but there were no injuries.
"It was fully involved when we arrived and had started to impinge on the trailer but we had six brigades here and they did a pretty good job to control it," he said.
"It could have been a much more volatile situation."
Four RFS brigades, including Tallong and Marulan, and two NSW Fire and Rescue units, one each from Goulburn and Bundanoon, attended the scene.
The blaze was extinguished by after 5pm.
Mr Gilchrist said Marulan brigade arrived within 12 minutes of the call, by which time the fire was moving towards the vegetable oil cargo.
"Without a doubt, the quick response by everyone and the quick thinking by the truck driver averted what could have been a disaster," he said.
Marulan BP isolated the bowsers and closed off access to the service station. There was also a 100-metre clearance zone around the blaze.
