Comedian Rodney Rude has moved into the construction business, lodging plans for a set of units and offices at Jamberoo. The venture might be a far cry from his day job, but it is likely to provide fodder for a future stage act.Rude, who was present as Kiama councillors deliberated the project, looked on incredulously as it was deferred two months, to await inspection of a tree. The development application was otherwise given a glowing report by council's senior staff, who recommended its approval. The plans were lodged under the company name Cumquat Productions, which is based at Jamberoo where Rude, whose off-stage name is Rodney Keft, has been based for more than 20 years. Involved will be the demolition of a home at 36 Allowrie St, and construction of five units, including a two-storey component, in its place. Two of the units will feature ground-level office space facing the street.Kiama council's director of environmental services Andrew Knowlson said the site was located on the eastern fringe of the Jamberoo commercial precinct, which includes several heritage buildings including the 160-year-old Jamberoo Pub, inter-war cottages and business premises.Mr Knowlson said although the concept was new for the township, it was considered an appropriate transition between the commercial and residential areas that caused no significant heritage concerns. He added that the scale was well below the permissable floor space ratio.Concerns were raised by neighbouring residents about loss of views and overshadowing. The item was deferred to address plans to remove a tree located on the southern boundary.Cr Trevor Fredericks, whose family has operated a general store in the same street for almost 90 years, said the development was needed at Jamberoo."I think it's a natural progression in the town's future. We're looking for more commercial space in the town centre," he said.Rude could not be contacted for comment on the application.
