An Illawarra drug trafficker who supplied 7000 ecstasy tablets to an undercover police officer was sentenced to 14 years in jail yesterday. The Wollongong District Court sentence is one of the longest jail terms handed down in the region.Jason Hristovski, 23, of Warrawong, was "a middle man" involved in supplying the region with ecstasy and amphetamines.During recorded telephone conversations, he told the undercover officer he could supply as many MDMA tablets as he wanted and bragged about their purity. He sold the tablets, with a total street value of $225,000, to the officer on three occasions in January last year and promised to supply a further 5000 tablets.Hristovski pleaded guilty to supplying a commercial quantity of ecstasy and two charges of supplying a large commercial quantity of amphetamines. He also pleaded guilty to possessing a loaded .22 calibre pistol at the time of his arrest.Judge Paul Conlon said although Hristovski was a middle man and did not reap major rewards, he deserved a tough sentence."The community has an expectation that those who deal in drugs and thereby assisting in the destruction of so many young lives should expect to receive stern punishment," Judge Conlon said. "The offender had the capacity to earn an honest living within the community but, under financial pressure and his problem with gambling, chose what he no doubt believed was a way to make easy money."The court heard Hristovski was declared bankrupt a year before his arrest after a failed attempt to run a racing car business during which he used the company's money to gamble. His parents had remortgaged their home to help repay tens of thousands of dollars debt Hristovski had accrued but were unable to prevent their son's bankruptcy.Hristovski will be eligible for parole on January 24, 2018.
