Wollongong's humble Hotel Illawarra is now ranked alongside world-famous watering holes such as Harry's Bar in Venice and Bondi's Icebergs, after making the Lonely Planet list, Great Bars of the World.Yesterday the bar was ranked in the top 100 on the website, with people encouraged to vote for their favourite bar from a list of 1000 .Lonely Planet editorial praised Hotel Illawarra for its "cool, relaxed, hip and happening" vibe, and said the 1932 heritage-listed art deco building had "sprung to life after recent renovations".About $4 million was spent on the hotel's refurbishment, almost two years ago.Hotel Illawarra is the only Wollongong venue to make the list."There's a nice eclectic mix," general manager Paul Anzani said. "There's a few escape zones where people can have a quiet escape, or a party haven."Mr Anzani said a designated cocktail person, a wide range of wines, quality staff and the restaurant Cucina were all reasons why between 5000 and 7000 customers visited each week.Last night also saw the arrival of So You Think You Can Dance choreographer Adam Williams with his live dance show.
