BlueScope boss Noel Cornish is one of many eager to get one last glimpse inside Port Kembla's No 5 blast furnace before it is resealed for up to 20 years.Mr Cornish, BlueScope's Australian and New Zealand Steel Manufacturing Businesses chief executive, has been involved in eight relines at Whyalla, Newcastle and Port Kembla since starting work at BHP in 1969. He is so interested in the present reline he has made 10 visits to see progress first hand."This has been a first class reline," he said. "It has been the best one I've been involved with in terms of the capability of the team. "This has really set BlueScope up in this area for another 20 years. We will be able to come strongly out of this global financial crisis. "I am just thrilled by the effort that has gone in."Mr Cornish even managed to take BlueScope Steel managing director Paul O'Malley to the top of the 90m-high blast furnace bleeder platform."He came to get a better insight," he said.Mr Cornish said looking inside the furnace at regular intervals made him appreciate how much had changed in 40 years. "When I first joined the steelworks we used to reline these furnaces every three or four years, but technology and operating practices have improved, so it is now up to 17 years between relines."
