Convicted killer Matthew Gagalowicz will walk free from Cooma jail within a week after serving just six years behind bars.In a surprise move, the State Parole Authority granted Gagalowicz bail today after the authority announced in February it did not intend to release the prisoner because he was not ready.Gagalowicz was convicted of manslaughter in 2005 after he used a metal baseball bat to bash to death his drug supplier, Ricky Smith, at Farrell Rd in February 2003.Mr Smith's body was dismembered and buried in the backyard.Gagalowicz was sentenced to eight years in jail, but two years was later added as the original sentence was found to be manifestly inadequate by the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal.Gagalowicz, 24, is eligible to begin his parole between today and June 26 provided he abides by certain conditions including a ban on drugs and alcohol. One of the conditions of his parole is that he not leave the ACT.For the full report see Saturday's Mercury.
