Where to celebrate Australia Day in Wollongong

Don't forget your autograph book on Australia Day as some of the Illawarra's favourite sports stars join official celebrations in Wollongong tomorrow.Steve Waugh will appear at the ahm Active Zone in Lang Park from 11am and will test his arm at the thong throwing competition at 2pm at Brighton Beach.It is the second year in a row the former Australian of the Year has spent our national day in Wollongong.

  • CLICK HERE to find out what's on in your areaThe Wollongong Hawks will also make an appearance at the Wollongong festivities.All your favorite players, including captain Mat Campbell, Glen Saville, Tywain McKee, Cameron Tragardh and Zac Delaney will be at Lang Park signing autographs and meeting fans.Australia Day ambassador, entrepreneur, adventurer and philanthropist Dick Smith, will address those gathered at St Mary Star of the Sea College at 3pm for a citizenship ceremony.Wollongong Harbour and its surrounds will host the day's activities with traditional favourites like the Illawarra Aquathon and the sand sculpture competition at Brighton Beach alongside new events like the laser skirmish challenge at Flagstaff Hill.There will also be plenty of live entertainment for all the family with the main stage at Flagstaff Hill and the children's stage at Osbourne Park providing performances from noon.The day will finish with a blast at 9pm with fireworks over Wollongong Harbour.In Shellharbour, Australia Day activities will be at Reddall Reserve.The fun begins at 7am with breakfast by the lake for $3 to raise money for charity.There will be live music from 8.30am and a sand sculpture competition with a $1000 prize.Shellharbour City Council's Australia Day ambassador, singer, songwriter and multi-Golden Guitar Award-winner Darren Coggan will address the crowd from the main stage.At Kiama, Kiama Downs, Jamberoo and Gerringong, the day will start with breakfast on the beach followed by activities including beach volleyball, sand sculpture, teddy bears' picnic and a treasure hunt.From 3pm there will be a citizenship and awards ceremony at Hindmarsh Park, with live entertainment and addresses by Kiama's Australia Day ambassador Susie Maroney.
