Outraged residents have made their voices heard at Scarborough Cemetery in protest at the Wombarra cable car proposal. The group met on Saturday to discuss Wombarra businessman John Watson's plan for a $3.2 million Austrian-designed cable car link from Wombarra to the top of the escarpment."The view of the group is it's an environmentally sensitive area," Vida Bliokas said.

  • VOTE IN POLL: Where would you like to see an escarpment cable car?"The land is unstable and it's (the cable car) incredibly inappropriate for this location, in terms of the impact on narrow streets and because it's not in the hub of Wollongong."There is great concern about noise pollution because this area of the escarpment acts as a natural amphitheatre, and we think it would have a huge visual impact."It would also impact the roads through Thirroul and Bulli, which are already gridlocked at the weekend."Ms Bliokas said there were lots of broader concerns expressed about the land in general."Longer term, we want to encourage Wollongong City Council to look after that land better," she said."There are concerns over whether the council is using the power it has to inspect that land properly."The group planned to fight the development proposal."The sense is that it's completely inappropriate," she said."There are environmental and ecological concerns ... concerns about landslip, fire safety and the noise and visual impact."
