An anaesthetist who was caught driving to work with an alcohol reading three times the legal limit has kept his job at Wollongong Hospital.Dr Michal Petr has instead been disciplined after pleading guilty in Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday to driving with a high-range blood alcohol reading of 0.161.Police recorded the reading after detecting Dr Petr travelling at 105km/h in an 80km/h zone at Woonona on April 17.The anaesthetist was on his way to work as a contractor at Wollongong Hospital.Yesterday, a hospital spokeswoman said Dr Petr had been subject to disciplinary action.The spokeswoman said Wollongong Hospital had a zero-tolerance approach to drug and alcohol intoxication."All staff and contractors at Wollongong Hospital have a responsibility to come to work free from the effects of drugs or alcohol," she said."Each employee is aware of this responsibility under a code of conduct and their terms of employment. Wollongong Hospital has a zero-tolerance policy on this issue."Staff who breach the policy will be subject to disciplinary action."The hospital has fully investigated this incident and taken appropriate action."The spokeswoman could not disclose the nature of the disciplinary action for privacy reasons.When asked what safeguards were in place to detect intoxicated staff, she said procedures were available to report and investigate staff suspected of being under the influence of drugs and alcohol.Dr Petr also performs procedures at Figtree Private Hospital.Comment was sought from hospital management but wasn't obtained at the time of publication.During Tuesday's hearing, Dr Petr's solicitor, John Sutton, told magistrate Chris McRobert the April incident was the first time his client had been charged with a drink-driving offence.Dr Petr has lodged an appeal against his $1000 fine and 12-month driving disqualification.Dr Petr and Mr Sutton could not be contacted yesterday.
