An 18-year-old man has been airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital with suspected spinal injuries following a workplace accident on an island on the Shoalhaven River earlier today. The man was installing an electric fence on the 121ha Burraga Island, near Nowra, around 11.30am when he reportedly fell from the back of a stationary ute, landing on his head.Paramedics were called after he complained of feeling pain from his lower back to the base of his neck and loss of feeling in his feet and hands.Paramedics used a private punt - the only way to access the island - to get to the man before stabilising him and calling for a rescue helicopter. The ambulance arrived about midday and airlifted the man to the spinal care unit of the Royal North Shore Hospital. He was reported to be in a satisfactory condition yesterday afternoon. The island, known to locals as Pig Island, was sold earlier this month to a Hong Kong-based family for $2.5 million. The new owners planned to expand a beef cattle herding operation on the island and were talking to the previous owners about buying an existing herd to start their business.
