The London Olympics might be out of reach, but Illawarra athlete Talissa Scott is on track for a place in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.Competing at last weekend’s NSW Youth Track and Field championships, the 18-year-old from Kiama finished third in the under 20 women’s 100m sprint final. But the long jump is where Scott left her mark. After initial jumps of 6.10m and 6.20m, the Illawarra Blue Stars standout clinched the title with a powerful leap of 6.23m.Scott’s new PB ranks as the region’s best jump by a female athlete. Her previous PB before the meet was 6.08m.‘‘I was pretty excited,’’ Scott said. ‘‘I’ve extended my run-up and I’ve been trying to get it right, and it all came together on the weekend. I’m hoping to get to the world juniors in Spain and I have to finish either first or second at the Australian Youth championships to qualify.‘‘The Olympic selection trials are coming up in Melbourne and even though I don’t think I’ll get picked for London, it’ll be a really good experience.’’Coached by Albion Park-based Rick Watkins, Scott completed her HSC at Kiama High last year and is about to start her first year of a primary teaching degree at Wollongong University.‘‘It’s good that the pressure of the HSC is gone now,’’ she said. ‘‘It’s freed me up to concentrate more on my training and so far it’s paying off.’’ Illawarra Blue Stars spokesperson Valmai Loomes believes Scott has the potential to succeed on the world stage.‘‘Talissa now must be ranked as one of the best female athletes from this area over the last 10 years,’’ Loomes said.‘‘Along with high jump champion [and Olympian] Petrina Price, Talissa can look forward to a promising representative career. She needs to be in the top two at the national youth titles but her win and jumping on the weekend shows that she can achieve this.‘‘Athletics Australia will certainly be monitoring her progress and will mark her as a future Australian rep come the next Commonwealth Games.’’
