Police are investigating and appealing for information after a man has been captured on a security camera opening an unlocked car door in a Wombarra driveway on Saturday.
The man then looks through the car, takes items, closes the door and runs away.
With almost a quarter of all thefts from motor vehicles taking place in residential driveways, police are urging the public not to be complacent.
Wollongong Police District Crime Manager, Detective Chief Inspector Brad Ainsworth said it was an offence to leave cars unlocked.
"We have seen a definite increase in thefts from motor vehicles in recent weeks, and what we're finding is that people just aren't taking the time or care to ensure their property is safe," he said.
"Thieves are wandering up and down residential streets checking door handles and raiding the contents of cars that aren't properly locked.
"By undertaking some simple crime prevention measures, you can protect your property and avoid the hassle of having things stolen."
Det Insp Ainsworth suggested when a car is unattended, drivers should close all windows, remove the key from the ignition and lock all doors.
Car owners are urged to remove all property especially mobile telephones, clothing, wallets/purses, bags and money in consoles.
Drivers should never leave important identification documents or cards in the vehicle when it is left unattended.
Det Insp Ainsworth said to use caution when taking goods to your motor vehicle in shopping centres because some thieves watch owners take property to their motor vehicles and steal the items when they leave to continue shopping.
Tradespeople who may not be able to remove items from their vehicles should try and secure their tools and equipment in locked cabinets or fit a locked canopy to their trays.
He encouraged residents to report any suspicious activity you see in your street or places you are visiting; people walking around parked cars without a purpose or trying door handles should be reported to the police.
