The Canberra United recruit held the W-League's all-time scoring record from the competition's inception until January last year, when Sam Kerr took the lead and finished with a 70-goal haul.

Shellharbour's Heyman trails the former Perth Glory star by just seven goals. And now she has a golden chance to take back the coveted record.

"That's the biggest focus. It was so funny because personally, I held that record since season one and for her to take it at the last little bit, I was devastated," Heyman said.

"I'm definitely going to work towards that in the first two weeks."

Heyman has come out of retirement and signed with United for the 2020/21 W-League season.

It's a major addition to Canberra's strike force after they only managed to score 13 times last campaign.

The 32-year-old striker has won two golden-boot awards and scored 63 times in the W-League, including 51 goals for Canberra across eight decorated seasons.

Heyman called coach Vicki Linton shortly after she was announced as Canberra's new mentor, outlining her intentions to push for a W-League return.

Linton sent her to play with Sydney University in the NSW Premier League to first see if she was physically ready to make her come back.

She scored in the first 20 minutes of her short NPLW stint, showing Linton she was in a position to play in the W-League once more.

"It was Michelle Heyman. That's what I know of her," Linton said of her overall performance.

"Regardless of the time out of the game, it was Michelle being Michelle. It was really pleasing. Talking with her about how she was feeling about playing, it was all very positive.

"I was mindful of her loading and making sure it was gradual and not doing too much too soon. We'll see her through our pre-season here, but making sure she's going to be robust enough and that we can look after her to get the best out of her."

Heyman joined United for their first training session on Monday morning, with the club to start pre-season next week.

United is expected to announce the final player on their roster next week, with a second goalkeeper to join Sally James.

Linton was pleased to see the majority of her squad come together for the first time, saying they've got a lot of hard work to do before the season starts on December 27.

"We've been working really hard as a staff and we've been waiting the players. Coming altogether now, how you can you not love this?" Linton said.

"One of the players said to me [at training], 'it's so good to be here.' Everyone had a smile on their face and I think the staff share that as well.

"I think we're all really pleased and excited. There's a lot of hard work to do, so maybe the players aren't as excited now. We've got the league, we know what we're trying to achieve and get to."
