Guests packed tightly into the Sydney Opera House concert hall foyer at 5pm eagerly awaiting the royal couple.
They arrived an hour later, the Prince of Wales wearing a grey suit and the Duchess in a contemporary sequined grey dress.
They chatted with the crowd briefly outside the Opera House before being officially welcomed by NSW Governor Marie Bashir.
The Illawarra contingent, including Kiama Mayor Brian Petschler, Wingecarribee Mayor Juliet Arkwright, former Shellharbour mayor Kellie Marsh and Kiama MP Gareth Ward, were among the first to meet the Duchess.
Despite being warned the royal couple would not be able to meet everyone, Camilla made a concerted effort to greet each member of the group.
