Dubbed the "mad dog of the Middle East" by former US president Ronald Reagan, Muammar Gaddafi lived up to that reputation until his death.
Gaddafi was famous for statements insisting Libya was a democracy, that he was not a dictator and he was a much loved "king of kings".
Here are some of the most bizarre quotes:
"We will fight in every valley, in every street, in every oasis, and every town. We won't surrender again; we are not women; we will keep fighting." - Vowing to fight until the end against Libya's new government in an address on Syrian television in September 2011.
"They love me, all my people ... they would die to protect me." - Insisting the people of Libya were not protesting against him, during an interview in February 2011.
"Whoever says that is ignorant and stupid." - His response to people who described him as a dictator, during an SBS interview in 2010.
"I am an international leader, the dean of the Arab rulers, the king of kings of Africa and the imam of Muslims, and my international status does not allow me to descend to a lower level." - Remarks after his microphone was cut for denouncing King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia during a meeting of the Arab League in 2009.
"It should not be called the Security Council, it should be called the terror council." - During his first speech to the United Nations, which lasted for 90 minutes, in 2009.
"I woke up at 4am, before dawn! You should be asleep! You're all tired after a sleepless night!" - Complaining of jet lag during the same speech.
"There is no state with a democracy except Libya on the whole planet." - Giving a lecture to US academics at Columbia University, New York in 2006.
"[Abraham] Lincoln was a man who created himself from nothing without any help from outside or other people. I followed his struggles. I see certain similarities between him and me." - Quoted in The Pittsburgh Press in 1986.
"Of course it irritates me, nevertheless I do believe the majority of ordinary people in the four corners of the globe do love me." - Laughing about being called mad, during an interview in 1989.
"All right, then nobody can complain if we ask pregnant women to make parachute jumps." - After copping criticism for saying a woman's place is in the home because of "biological defects" during a meeting with Egyptian women, quoted in 1973.
