Driver dies as car bursts into flames after hitting kangaroo

A driver has died when his car burst into flames after he hit a kangaroo and crashed into a tree on the NSW south coast.

The 24-year-old man was driving on Callala Beach Road, Callala Beach, about 11pm yesterday.

"He collided with a kangaroo. As a result he’s lost control of his motor vehicle and collided with a tree," said Inspector Joe Thone, Shoalhaven local area command duty officer.

"The vehicle has then caught alight and both the vehicle and the driver have been incinerated."

Off duty police officers came across the crash and tried to assist, but the driver died at the scene.

"They didn’t see it happen, they drove upon it," Inspector Thone said.

Inspector Thone said Callala Beach Road is a rural road surrounded by coastal bushland.

One truck from the Rural Fire Service also attended the crash.

The Callala Beach man’s name may be released later today.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
