Councillors were addressed by six members of the community at last night's council meeting, which was held at Dapto's Ribbonwood Centre as part of a commitment to hold twice-yearly meetings outside the city centre.

Dapto High School student and school captain Justin Mears spoke in support of Vicki Curran's notice of motion seeking to increase pedestrian and cyclist safety along Bong Bong Road, saying the current situation needed fixing.

"Bong Bong Road is the only road to get in and out of Horsley ... 50 per cent of Dapto High School students live in Horsley," he said.

"Widening the footpath would help secure the safety of many residents and students."

He also said heavy use of the Dapto skatepark by young children and teenagers made for an increased accident risk along the road.

Fellow student Jaycee Armstrong called on the council to establish an environmental group in the southern suburbs that included Dapto High pupils, while the school's sports prefect, Dylan Jackson, said Dapto lacked much-needed sporting facilities.

He suggested the council consider building a leisure centre at Horsley to help keep residents active.

Councillors also heard from Dapto Chamber of Commerce member Ian Fitzgibbon, neighbourhood forum convenor Romeo Cecchele and Dapto resident Fiona Abercrombie, who each presented a snapshot of issues affecting the area including proposed traffic changes along Western Avenue, concerns over flooding, West Dapto development and lack of disabled access at Dapto swimming pool.
