Paramedics were called to the colliery about 2.10pm and found Mr Moran, 52, suffering a number of broken bones, including all ten toes, a broken wrist and a fractured second vertebrae.
It is believed he was unloading steel and other materials from a truck when the load fell on him.
He was stabilised at the scene before being taken to Liverpool Hospital, where he is in a serious but stable condition.
He will undergo surgery today.
A spokeswoman for Xstrata Coal, which owns the colliery, confirmed a sub-contractor had been hurt yesterday.‘‘The incident is being investigated by site personnel,’’ she said.
