It is understood that the man, in his 40s, was working outside at BlueScope Steel when he spotted a one-tonne piece of machinery falling towards him.
He tried to run away but the machinery pinned his lower left leg, partially severing it.
Two ambulance crews were called to the scene at 7.51am, which was near the north gate of the complex, and found the machinery had already been lifted from the man’s leg.
Paramedics gave the man pain relief and called the ambulance rescue helicopter to the scene.
The injured man was loaded into the helicopter about 9am in a serious but stable condition and was flown to St George Hospital.
WorkCover is understood to be investigating the incident.
