NSW Fire and Rescue crews were called to the Kapooka Ave home about 2.20pm on Wednesday and found a front room alight.
The fire was extinguished within minutes, but the room was extensively damaged by smoke and water.
Police established a crime scene, and initial investigations suggest the fire may have been deliberately lit, with evidence of forced entry to the home.
No one was home at the time of the fire.
Investigations into the blaze are continuing, but police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the circumstances leading up to the fire or who has any information that may be able to assist officers to contact Lake Illawarra police on 4232 5599 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
