Tarrawanna has secured the biggest signing coup in local football history after Scott Chipperfield inked a short-term deal with the Illawarra Premier League club this morning.
Capped 68 times for his country, Chipperfield will link up with his former club once his contract with Swiss champions Basel ends in June.
Basel just completed the Swiss League and Cup double and went on a giant-killing run in the Champions League where they eliminated Manchester United in the group stages.
They lost to eventual finalists Bayern Munich in the knockout rounds.
The 36-year-old Chipperfield is expected to be the latest big name to finish his career in the A-League, with both Sydney FC and the new western Sydney club expected to vie for his services.
But Chipperfield told the Mercury he would be more than happy to complete the IPL season with Tarrawanna if unable to pick up an A-League contract.
‘‘If I don’t pick up a contract with the A-League then I’ll play until the end of the season,’’ he said.
‘‘It’s all up in the air at the moment, but I’m pretty confident I can play a couple of games [for Tarrawanna].’’
