It was 6.10am Friday, his second day holding the sign to traffic on Windang Road, when Daniel Davey got his first offer of work from a construction company boss who pulled over and commended his early start.
Mr Davey started work on a casual basis that same day with Extreme Construction, on a building project in Wollongong that will continue until Christmas.
When he checked his phone he found more than 30 missed calls from other prospective employers.
He has since been offered a concreting apprenticeship starting in the new year, lawn-mowing work at Wollongong Surf Resort and several other opportunities. He also has a foot in the door with a scaffolding company.
"They said, 'You look pretty keen, we'll give you a go'," Mr Davey said.
"I'll maybe come out of it with two or three jobs. I'm pretty stoked. I've got more opportunities of saving and getting somewhere. I'd like the thank the community for the support."
Mr Davey said most of the offers were for casual work but he hoped it would lead to permanent, secure work.
Mr Davey believes many of the calls were the result of media highlighting his efforts, and not simply the sign alone. He had moved from Grafton to the Illawarra three months ago and took his job search on the road after he applied for more than 30 positions without success.
