North Wollongong Beach was named state winner of the water conservation award and was highly commended in the overall category, where top honours were reserved for the South Coast’s Huskisson Beach.
City Beach won the category for city beaches and was highly commended in the community partnerships and action section.
The awards, presented in Palm Beach today by Keep Australia Beautiful NSW acting CEO Bernie Murphy, encourage the coastal communities, councils, volunteers and surf lifesaving club member who look after the state’s beaches.
‘‘Wollongong City Council and the communities involved have demonstrated commitment to this busy stretch of coastline; the beaches and surrounds wouldn’t be in the state they’re in had it not been for planning, strategy and concern for the environment,’’ Mr Murphy said
