'Missing' man on beach contacts police

A 41-year-old man only found he was missing after reading news reports about it.

Last night, police were contacted following reports that a man has gone missing after wading out into choppy waters at Culburra Beach.

People on the beach had been watching him but turned away for a short while. When they turned back to the water, the man could not be seen.

Police, members of the Culburra and Kiama Surf Life Saving Club, and a NSW Ambulance rescue helicopter began searching for the 41-year-old but could not find him.

The search began again at 7.30 this morning. An hour later the man reported missing contacted police after reading news reports about the search.

Police confirmed he was the man they were looking for and the search was called off.
