‘‘At this time of year we’d prefer they were supplying frankincense and myrrh rather than cannabis,’’ Wollongong acting crime manager Darren Kelly said after yesterday’s operation.
Drug unit officers executed search warrants at several boarding house units in Church St at 11am yesterday.
They seized 500 grams of cannabis, drug paraphernalia, small amounts of cash and ammunition, Acting Inspector Kelly said.
‘‘People have been coming and going from the location so we reacted to intelligence provided to us,’’ he said.
While the operation was considered ‘‘small street level’’, it would still be shut down.
‘‘Cannabis is still illegal, it hasn’t been condoned, we react to this type of investigation the same way as we would to any other prohibited drug.
‘‘We hope this has an impact, dents the supply of drugs within the area, particularly so close to the CBD.’’
A 65-year-old man was charged with 10 counts of supplying a prohibited drug and one count of possessing ammunition.
A 45-year-old man was charged with six counts of supplying a prohibited drug and one of possessing a prescription restricted substance.
Both men were refused bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court on Friday.
Another 65-year-old man charged with supplying and possessing a prohibited drug and a 45-year-old woman charged with supply, were granted conditional bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court in January.
Investigations are continuing and further arrests have not been ruled out.
