The council is investigating claims work has been carried out without the appropriate approvals.
A spokeswoman said residents had been door-knocked and offered discounted tree pruning for cash.
‘‘We have also been told in some instances, money has been taken and work left uncompleted,’’ a spokeswoman said.
‘‘We would ask any residents who have been contacted about tree removal and are concerned about the business’ legitimacy to contact NSW Fair Trading or council.
‘‘We also ask residents to let their neighbours know about council’s investigation.’’
