A 63-year-old woman is dead and her one-year-old grand-daughter is in hospital after the two were found unconscious in a backyard pool at Dapto this afternoon.

Lake Illawarra police Acting Inspector Jason Harrison said the woman had walked out into the backyard with the toddler in a baby carrier strapped to her chest after a family lunch about 2.15pm.
Minutes later, the woman’s grandson went out into the yard and found the woman and child in the pool. He alerted his mother who pulled her mother and daughter from the water.
Paramedics were called to the house and managed to revive the little girl. She was taken to Wollongong Hospital where she was being treated last night.
Insp Harrison said the grandmother could not be revived.
A report will be prepared for the coroner to determine the cause of the woman’s death.
