People packed Belmore Basin, lined up along Cliff Road, stood in Lang Park or found any other vantage point to take in the fireworks.
The Australia Day fireworks, which were bigger than those on New Year’s Eve kicked off at 9pm and ran for 15 minutes.
There were plenty of oohs and ahhs to be heard in the crowd between the bangs from the fireworks.
Children who managed to stay up past their bedtime pointed to the sky in amazement at the bright lights and patterns drawn in the sky.
Some people even took advantage of the location and went for a swim while watching the heavens lighting up.
It was a fitting end to a special day - and a day where everyone seems to have had fun and taken it easy.
Wollongong Police said the crowds at Belmore Basin were well-behaved and there were no incidents or trouble throughout the day.
