Inspector Tim Beattie said that gardeners at the site discovered the item this morning and called police.
‘‘A crime scene was established and specialist police have processed that scene and the item located,’’ Insp Beattie said.
He said the item, which was discovered on the grounds of the manor, has ‘‘been assessed by police and been taken away for forensic investigation.
Insp Beattie said police were investigating the incident and asked anyone with any information to contact Wollongong police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
The Wollongong Conservatorium of Music is located at Gleniffer Brae.
Conservatorium CEO Andrew Snell was in Thirroul at the time of the incident but he said that staff were not evacuated.
‘‘This item was in a shed at the back of end of the Sorensen Gardens backing onto Robson Road,’’ he said.
‘‘It was quite a long way away from where the buildings are so the police just told us to stay away from the area.’’
