History condemns it as a near impossible feat, but St George Illawarra star Daniel Vidot has backed the winless Dragons as capable of surging deep into September - despite their insipid start to the year.
Since the inception of the top-eight finals format in 1999, only six teams have rallied from three straight season-opening losses and featured in that year's finals.
Ironically, the Dragons and Warriors, this year's early wooden-spoon candidates after plunging to 0-3 starts in 2013, have been the poster boys for when it comes to resurrecting stalled campaigns.
Nathan Brown's star-studded St George Illawarra recovered from four straight defeats to start the 2005 season before marching into the preliminary final.
And the Warriors went one better in reaching the 2011 grand final after a horror beginning.
Brisbane (1999 and 2007), Melbourne (2000) and Manly (2009) were all bundled out of the finals in the first week, despite a winless first month of the season.
Bookmakers have reacted swiftly to the Dragons' stuttering start, winding out their quote to win the premiership to $101.
But Vidot, who made his first appearance for the Red V in 2013 during the side's 13-point loss to former club Canberra, rallied his teammates to turn around their flagging season.
"We can definitely still win it, I reckon - we just need that one win and the team will get switched on," he said.
"There's definitely chances to make finals and it's early days yet.
"We all believe in each other and believe in each other's skills.
"It's just a matter of getting that first win - and then we get that roll on. I'm confident that we're going to come out of it."
Dragons five-eighth Jamie Soward added: "We got together [yesterday] morning, had a really good chat and understand the position we're in and where we want to be.
"At the moment we're not far away from getting the wins and being on [some] points. We've just got to make sure we turn up for the full 80 [minutes]."
If the Dragons were hoping to swiftly turn around their fortunes, a trip up the Princes Highway to take on fierce rivals Cronulla probably wasn't the preferred fixture they were after.
St George Illawarra have lost five of their past seven visits to Sharks Stadium.
But Vidot stressed that it only took two points to lift the gloom hovering over the Dragons.
‘‘A win this weekend could turn this side around,’’ he said.
‘‘The belief is there – we just have to prove it with our actions out there and get a win.
‘‘Cronulla’s a bit of a rivalry team for us and if we get that win, things can just go up from there.’’
Soward said he is expecting the spotlight to firmly shine on him after speculation linked the Dragons with out-of-favour Gold Coast half Jordan Rankin.
Buoyed by Nathan Fien’s influence on a Dragons attack slowly showing signs of life against the Raiders, Soward said he has been feeling the pressure of angst directed at the side’s playmakers.
‘‘I’d be lying if I said I didn’t,’’ he said. ‘‘In saying that I’ve been around long enough to understand what I need to do to get back into a little bit of form.
‘‘I’ve trained really well this off-season, it’s just a matter of getting the ball to bounce your way and all of a sudden things start happening for you.’’
He also backed the incumbent halves to propel St George Illawarra out of the competition cellar.
‘‘We just bought a young guy called Josh Drinkwater and you’ve got a World Cup winner in Nathan Fien and I’d like to think of myself as pretty handy,’’ Soward said.
‘‘It’s up to the club to do what they want to do [with Rankin], but I’m pretty happy with the halves stocks we’ve got here.’’
