The Illawarra District Noxious Weeds Authority (IDNWA) searched the man’s home about 3.30pm last Thursday after receiving a tip-off that weed Salvinia was being sold from the premises.
Officers found at least 500 weeds growing in four large ponds in the backyard.
The home owner was fined for selling the illicit plants.
Salvinia is an aquatic weed that is regarded as a serious threat to waterways and irrigation.
Illawarra residents have been encouraged to contact the IDNWA if they are aware of other people growing Salvinia.
Plant locations should be located to the IDNWA for proper identification and disposal.
